2017 Ford F-150 new engine specs and capabilities

Building upon the success of the 2.7-litre EcoBoost and first-generation 3.5-litre EcoBoost engines, the second-generation 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine will bring about several enhancements in terms of power and efficiency. Of course, the 2017 Ford F-150 new engine specs and capabilities would be much less impressive without the help of the all-new, Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission. Let’s take a closer look.

“The powertrain is the heart of every F-150, and together our all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 10-speed transmission will give our customers better power, efficiency and confidence.”

-Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, Product Development, and chief technical officer

The 2016 F-150’s second-generation 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine

Perhaps the most notable change for the F-150’s second-generation 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine is the increase in torque. The new engine offers 450 lb-ft torque, which is better than any other gasoline- or diesel-powered V6 engine on the market. It is also built with new, advanced components designed to improve drivability, efficiency, and performance.

Dual-direct and port fuel-injection system

The all-new, Ford-first dual-direct and port fuel-injection system includes two injectors per cylinder that work together to enhance engine power output, efficiency, and emissions.

All-new turbochargers

The engine’s all-new turbochargers work together with Ford-first electrically activated wastegates and a lighter turbine wheel to deliver more boost, improved efficiency, and better responsiveness.

Standard Auto Start-Stop

This engine feature helps save on fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by shutting off the engine when the vehicle is at a complete stop—that is, except when towing or in four-wheel-drive mode.

Paired with an all-new, Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission

Along with the second-generation 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, the 2017 Ford F-150 also offers an all-new, Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission, which delivers improved acceleration and performance when compared to the previous six-speed automatic transmissions. The new 10-speed transmission is designed with wide-span gear spacing and drag-reducing actions for better efficiency as well as best-in-class towing capabilities. Advanced, lightweight materials improve performance, while smarter shift logic allows for added confidence in tow/haul mode. In fact, the new 10-speed automatic transmission utilizes all-new real-time-adaptive shift-scheduling algorithms to ensure it’s in the right gear at the right time for the best possible driving experience.
