How Does the Engine-Exhaust Brake Work?

6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel Engine-Exhaust Braking

In order to help your Super Duty perform with better handling and control while towing down hills, Ford has upgraded its innovative Smart Exhaust Brake function. How does the engine-exhaust brake work, you may wonder. Keep reading to find out with Sherwood Ford of Sherwood Park, AB.

When you choose a Ford Super Duty vehicle, you’re getting the most trusted name in heavy duty pickup trucks. We all know the power and unbeatable control the Ford Super Duty equipped with the 6.7L Power Stroke provides while going uphill. Advances in technology have made going downhill just as easy. Thanks to many years of testing and perfecting, the engineers at Ford have developed a system that is capable of keeping your truck and trailer under control no matter how steep of an incline you’re going down.

What is the Engine-Exhaust Brake?

The Engine-Exhaust Brake has become an integral part of the Super Duty’s turbocharger. When activated, the engine brake will automatically adjust the vanes on the exhaust side of the turbocharger. This generates engine pressure.

While the Engine-Exhaust Brake is engaged, extra braking power will require less manual brake application. This is especially helpful when traveling on downhill grades. This provides extra control over the truck and trailer while driving downhill. The system maintains control over the truck and trailer at a steady pace. This reduces the amount of time spent using the truck’s brakes, which in turn helps reduce the need for maintenance.
