Fathom: Ford New Electric Truck is Named

Ford has revealed the name of its midsize electric truck arriving in 2027: the Ford Fathom. It’s the first vehicle built on Ford’s Universal EV Platform, and the name says a lot about who it was built for.

Why “Fathom”?

A fathom is six feet — originally the span of a person’s outstretched arms. Sailors borrowed it to measure water they couldn’t see the bottom of. Eventually the word came to mean something else entirely: to understand something completely.

That’s the whole idea in six letters. A truck that started with years of trying to understand a specific customer, named after a word about measuring what you can’t see.

Ford could have gone alphanumeric. The F-150 has done fine with that approach for decades. But the team spent nine months on this one, digging through a century of Ford naming history — Galaxie, Taurus, Ranchero — and cutting hundreds of options. Two Ford copywriters landed on “Fathom” independently. It survived every round and came out the clear favourite in focus groups.

What You Actually Get

The price. The Fathom starts at CAD $42,690 with the standard-range battery. Buyers who qualify for the $4,000 EVAP incentive* bring that down to $38,690 — right in the heart of the affordable EV market, and well under what most people assume an electric truck costs.

The space. It seats five adults and is projected to have more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4. You also get both a frunk and a bed, which is a combination almost nothing else in this price range offers.

The tech. Every Fathom is BlueCruise capable — Ford’s hands-free, eyes-on highway driving assist that works in designated Blue Zones. The next-generation BlueCruise integrates with Apple Maps for a smoother on-ramp to off-ramp experience. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with a large high-resolution touchscreen and a digital key you can use from your phone.

The power. Bidirectional charging means the truck can send electricity back out — useful for a job site, a campsite, or an Alberta power outage in February.

When Can You Get One?

Pre-orders open in early 2027. That’s still a stretch away, but the interest list matters — early allocation on a launch vehicle like this tends to move fast, and Alberta demand for an electric truck at this price is not going to be small.
