Steps to checking your Ford vehicle’s tires

This information is gone over in the video below if you prefer a visual lesson. Tires are a critical part of your vehicle, and traction can keep you safe. Here are the steps for checking your vehicle’s tires’ tread depth.

  1. Use a tread depth gauge. This is your first option if you want to check the tread depth at home yourself. You can also bring your vehicle to Sherwood Ford for a professional inspection. To use the gauge, press one end into the tread of your vehicle’s tire. You can easily read on the gauge what the tread depth is. Four-thirty seconds is a good tread depth.
  2. Repeat the use of the gauge. Make sure to use the gauge on multiple areas of each tire, to check for uneven wear and tear. Check every season for tire wear and tear.
  3. Use the tread wear bar indicator. This is your other best option for checking tire tread depth at home. Tread wear indicator bars are the little perpendicular bars running through your tire’s tread. If the top of the tread is even with the bars, then you need to replace your tires. The tread should be raised higher than the bars.
