Programming Ford Universal Garage Door Opener

This universal garage door opener feature provides a convenient way to replace up to three hand-held transmitters with a single, built-in device. It’s built into your Ford vehicle for convenient operation, but programming varies between vehicles and model years.

Programming Ford Universal Garage Door Opener

The Ford Universal Garage Door Opener can control your home security system, lighting, door locks and garage door all from one remote!  There are many different types of garage door remotes and transmitters, so you may be wondering how to do programming on your Ford.  First we’ll give you some tips and then direct you to a video below with how to program your specific remote.

Before you get started, you’ll first need to figure out what sort of universal opener is in your Ford vehicle AND what type of existing transmitter you have now.  First, let’s look at the door opener on your visor.  If yours has 3 buttons and one LED light like below, you have a HOMELINK sysyem.

If your door opener has three buttons with 3 LED lights like the one below, you have a CAR2U system.

You can always find information on how to program in your owners manual.  You NEED to know whether your existing opener is a fixed code or a rolling code transmitter.  So you’ll have to find out what it is BEFORE you can program your Ford Universal Garage Door Opener.  To do that, remove the cover from your existing opener.  If you see a row of coded switches like the one below, you have a fixed code transmitter. Produced prior to 1996, fixed-code transmitters are manually programmed with all steps inside your vehicle.

If you don’t see any codes in your transmitter like the one below, you have a rolling code. Produced after 1996, rolling-code transmitters change the coded signal each time the device is used with some programming steps performed outside your vehicle.

Always refer to your owners manual for specific instructions.  And one more thing before we get to the programming video.  When you finish programming your universal garage door opener on your Ford vehicle, make sure to keep your original remote to use with other vehicles, or for future programming.   This instructional video below will help explain how to program your universal garage door opener if you have a Homelink transmitter in easy to understand, step-by-step instructions.
