What is the LATCH system in my Ford vehicle?

Video guide to attaching a car seat using the LATCH system in a Ford

What is the LATCH system in your Ford vehicle? It is a way to attach your child’s car seat securely to your Ford vehicle’s seats. This system is recommended for forward-facing car seats and is considered a safety standard across the automotive industry. Keep reading below to learn about the LATCH system and to view a video guide to attaching a car seat using the LATCH system in a Ford.

What does the LATCH system acronym stand for?

The LATCH system is the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. Inside your Ford vehicle, you will be able to locate these anchors on your Ford seats, in the crevice where the back of your seats meets the base of your seats. These anchors and tethers are a place for you to attach the straps found on child safety seats.

Do I have to use the LATCH system for all car seats in a Ford?

As covered at the beginning of the video below, you have more than one option for securing a child safety seat in your Ford. The other option is a safety seat belt using the lock mechanism. There is also an upper LATCH system for forward-facing car seats, and you can see the location of those anchors and tethers in the video below.

How do I know which method to use for securing my child’s seat in a Ford?

Be sure to read the Owner’s Manual for your car seat, which should tell you which method to use for securing it in a vehicle. You can also read the Ford vehicle’s Owner’s Manual to see if it adds any specific instructions for safety seats. The best system will be the one your car seat and Ford vehicle Owner’s Manual suggest.
