What is a virtual run? 

A virtual run is one that you sign up for, but you get to run on your own time in your own location. You’ll still receive the usual merchandise, and your money will go to a good cause. Virtual races help keep people socially distant.

Seven races and virtual runs hosted in and around Edmonton, AB in 2021 

As you can imagine, most races will be virtual this year, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy it with friends and have a great time. There are still a few in-person races as well with adjustments for your safety. These seven races and virtual runs span between May 2021 and October 2021, giving you plenty of time to get fit. 

May 29, 2021 – Rise Up Challenge 2021: Day Shift 

The great thing about this race is it takes place in Alberta’s wilderness. Unlike previous years, there won’t be any obstacles. That’s to prevent contact this year. However, you’ll now be able to run, ruck, or bike the course as you please. 

June 12-13, 2021 – Survivorfest Run Events 

This virtual event is to be run on a 400m track of your choice. The race helps to fundraise and raise awareness for your local sexual assault centreWhile it is virtual this year, it should be returning to an in-person even in 2022, if that is your preference.  

June 28 – July 4, 2021 – Virtual Canada Day Fun Run 2021 

All participants will receive a limited-edition Canada Swag Pack and a Finisher’s Medal. The cost of this run goes towards supporting the Canadian Cancer Society. Runners are encouraged to fundraise for the event. 

July 8-11, 2021 – Mizuno Virtual Midsummer 5K 

The fastest three men and three women to complete this course will be offered cash prizes. To compete, you must use GPS tracking to record your time. Runners will also receive a free pair of shoes and sunglasses. 

August 15-31, 2021 – Servus Edmonton Marathon 

This virtual run provides runners with a race kit with a New Balance athletic jacket. There are a variety of distances to choose from. Participants are encouraged to share their pictures of the race on social media. 

October 2, 2021 – Rise Up Challenger 2021: Night Shift 

This is the counterpart to the first run on our list, the Day Shift run. This challenging course is also in the wilderness. If you do both runs, you’ll be able to see how you improved your time over the summer.  

October 3, 2021 – First Responders Half Marathon 

This race features chip timing with live event updates. Participants will receive an entry pack and the eligibility to be in a drawing for more prizes. The fastest running teams will also win prizes.
