What does Ford E-Latch do?

The E-Latch door system allows you to unlock your vehicle using a key FOB or your phone as a key. Whichever you choose, this system opens the door at the press of a button, as long as one of the two methods above is in range. It’s an easier way to access your vehicle.

Steps to using Ford E-Latch door unlocking system to get into your vehicle

Before you get started using E-Latch, you need a compatible Ford vehicle. You’ll know that your Ford vehicle has E-Latch if it has a button located above the exterior door handles. Not all Ford vehicles are equipped with this door lock system.

  1. Have your phone-as-a-kay or your key FOB within range of the vehicle. You’ll need it within a few feet of your vehicle.
  2. Push the button to activate E-Latch.
  3. Use the door handle located below the button to open the door of your vehicle.
  4. The rear doors can be opened the same way, although the rear door handle may be located in a different location. Watch the video above for an example.

What you need to know about Ford E-Latch

Here are some fun facts about Ford E-Latch. Keep these in mind as you get into or out of your vehicle.

  • Once any door is opened using E-Latch, it will not close again until it has been opened all the way. This prevents you from pinching your fingers in the door.
  • To get out of your vehicle, simply use the interior door lever to unlatch your door. These levers do not require power to use.
  • If you lose power, you will need to attach jumper cables to your vehicle and charge the battery in order to access your vehicle.
