7 Tips for driving in flash floods
- Try to get to higher ground as quickly as you can. Especially avoid canyons or ditches, where water can be flowing very quickly.
- If you come upon flooded roads, turn around and try a different route. Water depth can be deceiving and more dangerous than you might think.
- Avoid crossing flooded roads on foot. The water may be flowing more rapidly than it seems.
- If your vehicle is caught in rising water, leave it immediately and get to higher ground.
- Be very cautious at night because it is harder to see water depths and other flood dangers.
- If your vehicle becomes submerged, remain calm and open your windows so your car fills with water and you can swim out.
- If you get out of your vehicle and are carried away by the flood, swim feet first to help avoid hitting your head on obstacles.
