What to do for Halloween instead of trick or treating

Halloween trick or treating alternatives for the Edmonton area

What is there to do for Halloween instead of trick or treating? While trick or treating is a great tradition, there are plenty of other Halloween themed events and activities that you can do in the Edmonton area in 2020. If trick or treating isn’t for you this year, then check out our trick or treating alternatives below.

Is trick or treating canceled in Edmonton, AB?

Several shopping centres in the area have canceled their regular trick or treating activity. We also anticipate that many people will choose not to trick or treat this year since many people would normally go to one of these public areas for the event. If you normally trick or treat at a shopping centre in the area, then you might want to consider a trick or treating alternative for the 2020 season.

Four fun Halloween activities to replace trick or treating in 2020

Whether you want to celebrate Halloween 2020 with just your family or you want to invite a few close friends, all of the activities below can work. Our four fun trick or treating alternatives can all be done indoors or outdoors as needed and can work with a group as small as two. If your Halloween plans have been canceled, we hope that you can enjoy one of these fun Halloween-themed activities:

A Halloween candy scavenger hunt Easter-style

Many people are turning to Easter traditions for Halloween this year. Thankfully, you don’t need to use your Easter eggs, because there are plenty of online and in-store varieties of plastic Halloween eggs which you can fill with candy. Then, all you need to do is find a place to hide your eggs and your kids will still get all of the Halloween candy that they desire.

If you want to make the activity even more appropriate for Halloween, you can do it in the dark with glow-in-the-dark eggs. If you can’t find glowing eggs, then putting a glow stick with each egg is a fine alternative. You can make the event scarier by dressing up for an older group of kids.

A socially-distant pumpkin carving contest

Pumpkin carving has always been a fall tradition, but this year why not make it the main Halloween event? If pumpkin carving is something that you already love, then this might be the natural way to replace trick or treating. Plus, a contest with a big candy prize is a great way to make it more exciting. You can even do multiple categories like scariest-pumpkin or most creative.

You have a few options for a socially-distant pumpkin carving contest. If you have a large family, then you might be content just doing the contest within the household and having everyone vote on a winner. If you want to include more people, then a virtual pumpkin contest is easy to pull off. Set a time that everyone has to finish by and use a video chat or pictures to judge the pumpkins.

A haunted outdoor Halloween movie

Who doesn’t love a good Halloween movie? Whether you want silly or scary, you have a multitude to choose from. To make this a Halloween event, you can move the movie outdoors using a projector, and decorate the area with cobwebs. This can even give kids an activity to dress up for.

Keeping the movie outdoors makes it easy to stay socially distanced. With some Halloween-themed treats, this event is sure to be a huge hit for kids and parents. Plus, you can still give out candy if you wish or you can ask everyone to contribute, making it almost like at-home trick or treating.

DIY Halloween costumes and decorations

Staying home this season gives you even more time to prepare DIY Halloween costumes and decorations. If your family loves to be creative, this could be a fun way to spend the entire day, and then you’ll have plenty of cool things to show off next Halloween. Otherwise, you can do just one DIY activity, before moving on to one of our other suggested activities.

There are many online tutorials for making costumes and decorations, so it may be worth finding one that you want to do ahead of time. IF you do it soon, you can order supplies online. We’d love to see what you come up with!
