All-wheel drive vs four-wheel drive

When searching for your next vehicle, you will likely have several questions to be answered before you can make a well-informed decision. For instance, if you’re on the lookout for a new SUV or pickup truck, then you’ve probably come across the terms all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Although some may use these terms interchangeably, they mean two different things. Here are some key differences between all-wheel and four-wheel drive.

All-wheel drive

All-wheel drive utilizes a front, rear, and center differential to distribute power to all four wheels. All-wheel drive is most commonly found in cars and crossover vehicles, and notable benefits include offering a better grip and sporty feel as well as higher safety ratings.

Four-wheel drive

Four-wheel drive, also known as 4×4, utilizes two differentials and a transfer case to distribute power to all four wheels and is typically found in trucks and truck-based SUVs. Advantages of four-wheel drive include providing ideal off-road traction and offering the option to turn it off.
